This study tested exactly what the claim says - it had men do either a biceps curl (single-joint) or dumbbell row (multi-joint) on each arm for 8 weeks and measured muscle growth. The results showed the biceps curl grew muscle by 11.06% while the dumbbell row grew by 5.16%, exactly matching the claim.
