What the Evidence Shows

What we've found so far is that the evidence we've reviewed supports a role for DHA in brain development and function. Our current analysis shows that DHA is a type of fat the brain uses to build brain cells and support proper brain activity [1].

Based on what we've reviewed so far, DHA appears to be involved in how the brain forms and operates. The single assertion we analyzed indicates that this nutrient is necessary for building brain cells and helping the brain work as it should . While this is consistent with what we might expect from prior knowledge, we only have one supporting claim in our current dataset and no studies that contradict it.

We do not have enough evidence to draw strong conclusions, and our understanding is still limited. The evidence we've reviewed leans toward DHA being important, but we cannot determine the extent of its role based on this data alone. We also cannot say how much DHA is needed, when it matters most, or how it affects different people at different life stages.

As more research becomes available, our analysis may change. Right now, we’re only seeing part of the picture.

Practical takeaway: DHA is a fat that your brain may need to build cells and function properly, based on what we’ve seen so far.
