Endurance training causes the heart to pump more blood with each beat, which stretches the chambers over time. The left ventricle gets larger and thinner, allowing it to hold more blood and recoil faster after squeezing. This faster recoil pulls blood into the ventricle more efficiently during relaxation. The left atrium also stretches and grows larger to handle the increased blood flow, acting as a better reservoir. These changes together raise the size of the left atrium beyond normal clinical thresholds, but the heart still fills and empties properly because the muscle relaxes quickly and the walls are not stiff or scarred.
