When whey protein hydrolysate is consumed, it breaks down quickly into small pieces that enter muscle cells faster than whole protein. This raises the level of leucine inside the muscle cells, which directly turns on a molecular switch called mTORC1. Once activated, mTORC1 triggers a chain reaction that builds new muscle proteins by increasing the activity of ribosomes and other tools that make proteins.
