When a person bends forward to lift something heavy, the exosuit's elastic bands stretch and pull on the hips and torso, creating a force that pushes the lower back into extension. This force cancels out part of the bending force from the lifted weight, so the spine doesn't have to bear as much pressure. With less force on the spine, the discs, ligaments, and bones experience less wear and tear with each lift, so damage builds up much slower over many lifts.
