Removing the entire thyroid gland often damages or cuts off the blood supply to the nearby parathyroid glands, which stop producing the hormone that keeps blood calcium levels normal. Without this hormone, bones stop releasing calcium and kidneys stop saving calcium, so calcium levels stay too low forever.
