In plain English

Adults who drink water with more than 100 μg/L of iodine for a long time have more than twice the odds of developing autoimmune thyroid disease compared to those who do not.

See the scientific wording

Prolonged exposure to drinking water with iodine concentrations exceeding 100 μg/L is associated with a more than twofold increased odds of autoimmune thyroid disease in adults, as demonstrated in a case-control study of 668 individuals in Shandong Province, China, where water iodine was the primary iodine source due to discontinued iodized salt use.

Why this might work

Too much iodine in the water gets absorbed by the thyroid gland, where it creates harmful molecules that damage the thyroid cells. This damage turns on a molecular alarm system inside the cells, causing them to release signals that attract immune cells. The immune system then starts attacking the thyroid because it sees its own proteins as foreign, leading to chronic inflammation and disease.

  1. Study: Prolonged Exposure to Elevated Iodine Levels in Drinking Water Is Associated With the Occurrence of Autoimmune Thyroid Disorders in Adults: Findings From a Case-Control Study Conducted in Shandong Province, China

People who drank water with a lot of iodine (over 100 micrograms per liter) for a long time were more than twice as likely to develop thyroid problems caused by their immune system attacking their thyroid, compared to people who drank water with less iodine.
