During intense endurance exercise, muscle fibers experience stress that makes their outer membranes more porous, especially in individuals with high aerobic fitness. This allows more myoglobin to leak out of the muscle cells into the bloodstream. This effect is stronger in females than in males, and the degree of leakage depends more on how well the body uses oxygen during exercise than on inflammation markers in the urine.
