When muscles are stressed during hard exercise, tiny tears happen in muscle fibers, which causes chemicals to be released that turn into a molecule called PGE2. This molecule gets broken down in the liver and kidneys into a stable form that shows up in urine. The amount of this urine marker goes up more in females than in males after the same exercise, because females have less muscle mass and lower aerobic fitness, so their muscles experience more stress per unit of tissue and produce more of this chemical signal.
