Why this might work

When muscles are worked with light weights until exhaustion, they burn through energy quickly, causing acid and waste products to build up inside the muscle cells. This makes the cells swell and pushes lactate into the blood. These changes are bigger than with heavy weights, but the muscle doesn't grow more because growth comes from how much the muscle fibers are stretched and pulled over time, not from the swelling or acidity. Both light and heavy weights can make muscles grow equally if the total work done is the same.
