When someone drinks alcohol and becomes dehydrated, the liver stops making sugar and starts breaking down fat, producing acidic ketone bodies. At the same time, the body can't process sugar properly, so it builds up a different acid called lactate. These acids lower the blood's pH, making it too acidic, and this disrupts normal body functions like fluid balance and electrolyte levels, which prevents recovery.

2 studiesWhen people drink a lot of alcohol, their blood becomes more acidic, and this study shows that alcohol drinkers have much higher levels of a chemical (lactate) that signals this acidity. This means their bodies are under more stress and recover slower.
