The Claim

Microencapsulated watermelon rind containing 4 grams of L-citrulline does not significantly alter tissue oxygen saturation (StO2) in healthy young adults during the 120 minutes following ingestion, despite improving endothelial function.

Description
1 study reviewed
In plain English

Taking 4 grams of L-citrulline from microencapsulated watermelon rind does not change tissue oxygen levels in healthy young adults over two hours after ingestion, but it does improve blood vessel function.

See the scientific wording

Microencapsulated watermelon rind containing 4 grams of L-citrulline does not significantly alter tissue oxygen saturation (StO2) in healthy young adults during the 120 minutes following ingestion, despite improving endothelial function.

Why this might work

After ingestion, L-citrulline is absorbed and turned into L-arginine in the kidneys, which the blood vessel lining uses to make nitric oxide. Nitric oxide causes blood vessels to widen, improving blood flow, but this does not increase the amount of oxygen reaching the tissues in healthy young adults.

  1. Study: Effect of microencapsulated watermelon (Citrullus Lanatus) rind on flow-mediated dilation and tissue oxygen saturation of young adults

Eating this special watermelon rind powder makes blood vessels relax better, but it doesn’t change how much oxygen gets to the tissues in healthy young people within two hours.
