When a person sleeps less than six hours a night, the brain's waste-clearance system slows down, letting tau proteins build up. At the same time, anxiety keeps the amygdala overactive, causing more tau to be released. With clearance down and release up, tau piles up in the amygdala, especially if amyloid is already present and the person carries the APOE ε4 gene, which makes clearance even worse.
