The Claim

In resistance-trained adults performing structured strength training four days per week for eight weeks, supplementation with 48 grams of plant-based protein blend plus creatine monohydrate does not result in significantly greater increases in fat-free mass, fat mass, or percentage body fat compared to supplementation with whey protein, plant protein alone, or carbohydrate placebo.

In plain English

Among adults who regularly lift weights four days a week for eight weeks, taking a blend of 48 grams of plant protein and creatine does not lead to greater changes in fat-free mass, fat mass, or body fat percentage than taking whey protein, plant protein alone, or a carbohydrate placebo.

See the scientific wording

In resistance-trained adults performing structured strength training four days per week for eight weeks, supplementation with 48 grams of plant-based protein blend plus creatine monohydrate does not result in significantly greater increases in fat-free mass, fat mass, or percentage body fat compared to whey protein, plant protein alone, or carbohydrate placebo, suggesting that protein source and creatine co-supplementation do not enhance body composition changes beyond the effects of resistance training alone.

Why this might work

When someone who already lifts weights regularly trains four days a week, their muscles are already maximally stimulated to grow and repair. Adding more protein or creatine does not make them grow more because the body has already reached its limit for how fast it can build muscle or burn fat under this training load. Creatine pulls water into muscle cells, but that does not lead to more muscle growth or less fat. The body uses all the protein it needs from any source to repair muscle, and extra protein or creatine does not push the system beyond its natural capacity.

What the research says

1 study
  1. Study: Body composition changes in resistance-trained adults Following 8-Weeks of supplementation with a combination of plant protein and creatine monohydrate

People who lift weights regularly gained muscle and lost fat at similar rates whether they took plant protein with creatine, plant protein alone, whey protein, or just sugar—so none of the supplements gave them a clear edge in changing their body shape.
