Omega-3 fatty acids enter immune cells and replace a fat called arachidonic acid in cell membranes. When the cells detect a bacterial signal, they try to make inflammatory chemicals using an enzyme called COX-2. The omega-3 fats block this enzyme and reduce the amount of arachidonic acid available, so less prostaglandin E2 is made. At the same time, the omega-3 fats stop a key signaling switch called NF-κB from turning on genes that make TNF-α, IL-1β, and MCP-1. This dual action cuts production of most inflammatory signals, but does not affect IL-6 and IL-8.
