Anti-thyroid drugs block the thyroid gland from using iodine to make hormones by stopping a key protein that pulls iodine into the gland and by disabling an enzyme that links iodine to hormone building blocks. This causes hormone levels in the blood to drop quickly. Additional reduction in blood flow to the gland limits the delivery of raw materials needed to make more hormones.
What the research says
3 studiesThis study looked at people taking medicine to calm an overactive thyroid, and found that when they stopped the medicine, those whose thyroid was still suppressed (low TSH) were less likely to get sick again — meaning the medicine worked to lower thyroid hormone levels while they were taking it.
This study showed that a common medicine for overactive thyroid (methimazole) successfully lowered the levels of thyroid hormones in patients, just like we’d expect.
This study shows that when people with an overactive thyroid take anti-thyroid meds, their hormone levels go back to normal—meaning the meds are working. When doctors lower the dose, the thyroid sometimes goes back to overproducing hormones, which proves the meds were holding it back.
