Atorvastatin blocks cholesterol production in the liver and muscle cells, causing cells to pull more cholesterol from the blood. This leads to too much cholesterol building up in muscle cells, which interferes with how insulin tells cells to take in sugar. At the same time, cholesterol levels drop inside insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, making them release more insulin to compensate. These changes happen without any change in body fat.
