The Claim

β-Alanine supplementation has a significantly greater ergogenic effect on exercise capacity (effect size 0.50, 95% CI 0.25 to 0.75) than on performance outcomes (effect size 0.11, 95% CI −0.20 to 0.42) during efforts lasting 0.5–10 minutes, indicating a stronger enhancement of endurance during sustained high-intensity efforts compared to peak output.

In plain English

β-Alanine supplementation improves endurance during sustained high-intensity exercise more than it improves peak performance in efforts lasting 30 seconds to 10 minutes.

See the scientific wording

The ergogenic effect of β-alanine supplementation is significantly greater for exercise capacity (effect size 0.50, 95% CI 0.25 to 0.75) than for performance outcomes (effect size 0.11, 95% CI −0.20 to 0.42) during efforts lasting 0.5–10 minutes, indicating it enhances endurance during sustained high-intensity efforts more than peak output.

Why this might work

Taking β-alanine increases a substance in muscles that soaks up acid buildup when the body works hard for more than 30 seconds. This keeps the muscle environment less acidic, allowing muscles to keep contracting strongly for longer without getting tired, but it doesn't make short bursts of maximum effort faster.

  1. Study: β-alanine supplementation to improve exercise capacity and performance: a systematic review and meta-analysis

This study found that taking β-alanine helps athletes hold out longer during tough, sustained efforts like repeated sprints, but doesn’t make them significantly faster in short, all-out bursts like a 100-meter dash.
