In plain English

In adults with chronic kidney disease and metabolic acidosis, sodium citrate and sodium bicarbonate result in the same change in blood pH after 12 months of use.

See the scientific wording

In adults with chronic kidney disease and metabolic acidosis, sodium citrate and sodium bicarbonate produce similar improvements in blood pH, with no statistically significant difference between the two agents over 12 months.

Why this might work

When sodium bicarbonate is taken, it breaks apart in the blood and its bicarbonate ions immediately bind to excess acid, turning it into carbon dioxide and water. When sodium citrate is taken, it travels to the liver, where it is turned into bicarbonate, which then enters the blood and also binds to excess acid. Both paths increase bicarbonate in the blood, which lowers acid levels and raises pH. The liver route is slower but avoids stomach upset.

  1. Study: A Comparison of Sodium Citrate and Sodium Bicarbonate's Safety and Effectiveness in Treating Metabolic Acidosis in Patients with Chronic Renal Disease

Both sodium citrate and sodium bicarbonate worked about the same at fixing the acidity in the blood of people with kidney disease after a year — neither was clearly better at that one job.
