Calcium deposition in arterial plaques serves as a stabilizing mechanism that reduces the risk of rupture.
Specialized cells around blood vessels turn into bone-forming cells and lay down hard, organized mineral deposits that replace weak, inflamed tissue. These deposits stop other cells from breaking down the mineral, making the plaque rigid and less likely to crack open.

2 studiesThe study found that plaques with more calcium are less likely to be dangerous and rupture, while plaques with little calcium are more likely to be unstable and break open. So calcium buildup seems to make plaques stronger.
This study found that artery plaques with calcium buildup that looks like bone are much more likely to be stable and not cause heart attacks or strokes, while plaques without this calcium are more likely to rupture.
