This leads to fat building up in the liver and muscles, and the muscles become less able to take in sugar from the blood. The liver then stores more fat, and the body produces more insulin to try to fix the high blood sugar. Over time, this causes the muscles to shrink, the liver to become damaged, and the blood vessels and brain to suffer from poor nutrient delivery and inflammation.
