Citrulline is converted into arginine, which boosts nitric oxide production to widen blood vessels and improve oxygen delivery to muscles. At the same time, citrulline helps remove ammonia built up during exercise, which reduces the body's need to produce energy without oxygen. With more oxygen available and less ammonia, muscles burn pyruvate for energy instead of turning it into lactate, so less lactate builds up in the blood.
