The Claim
Citrulline enhances urea cycle activity in the liver, leading to accelerated ammonia clearance and prolonged aerobic metabolism during physical exertion.
What the research says
Supports is higher
Support is ahead, but a single strong opposing study can change this.
These are independent scores, not a percentage. Higher-grade studies count more, so a single strong opposing study can outweigh several weaker ones.
Citrulline increases the liver's ability to remove ammonia from the blood and extends the time the body can use oxygen for energy during exercise.
See the scientific wording
Citrulline enhances urea cycle activity in the liver, accelerating ammonia clearance and prolonging aerobic metabolism during physical exertion.
Citrulline enters the liver and kidneys, where it is used to make arginine, which fuels a cleanup system that removes toxic ammonia. This allows the body to burn fuel with oxygen instead of producing lactic acid, so muscles can keep working longer without fatigue.
What the research says
3 studiesCitrulline in watermelon juice helped runners produce less lactic acid and more arginine after running, which means their bodies were better at clearing waste and using oxygen longer — just like the claim says.
Study: Ammonia detoxification promotes CD8^+ T cell memory development by urea and citrulline cycles
This study shows that citrulline helps cells remove a toxic waste product called ammonia, which is exactly what the claim says citrulline does. Even though it was tested in immune cells, not muscles or liver during exercise, the same cleanup system is involved.
This study found that giving horses a lot of citrulline helped their bodies process waste nitrogen better, which means their livers were likely removing ammonia more efficiently. While it didn’t test exercise, the same liver process is what the claim says citrulline does during workouts.
