This signals muscle cells to turn off the enzyme that converts pyruvate into acetyl-CoA, forcing the body to rely on fat for energy. Even though fat and ketones are abundant, the muscle does not increase the activity of the enzymes that break down fat for fuel, because the metabolic shift is controlled by blocking carbohydrate use, not by boosting fat-burning capacity.
