When a person eats mostly animal foods like meat and fish, especially raw or fermented ones, the gut bacteria that normally eat plant fiber die off, but other bacteria that break down protein and fat take over. These new bacteria keep the overall number and variety of gut microbes high, even without any fruits, vegetables, or grains. Some microbes also come directly from the intestines of the animals eaten and pass through the gut, adding temporary diversity.
