Why this might work

During intense exercise, the heart muscle uses all the oxygen it can pull from the blood, and the number of tiny blood vessels in the heart is already high enough to deliver the maximum possible blood flow per gram of tissue. Making the heart bigger doesn't increase how much blood each gram can get because the system is already running at its top capacity.
