The Claim
The superiority of bioavailability-enhanced turmeric (BE) formulations over conventional curcuminoid (CT) preparations for knee osteoarthritis pain relief is unproven; the apparent higher ranking of BE in network meta-analyses is influenced by indirect comparisons and differences in baseline pain intensity, and does not establish true differences in efficacy.
What the research says
Supports is higher
Support is ahead, but a single strong opposing study can change this.
These are independent scores, not a percentage. Higher-grade studies count more, so a single strong opposing study can outweigh several weaker ones.
Bioavailability-enhanced turmeric is not proven to work better than regular turmeric for knee osteoarthritis pain. The apparent advantage seen in combined analyses is influenced by indirect comparisons and baseline pain differences, not by a proven difference in effectiveness.
See the scientific wording
Although bioavailability-enhanced turmeric (BE) formulations are designed to increase curcumin absorption, their superiority over conventional curcuminoid (CT) preparations for knee osteoarthritis pain relief is unproven; the apparent higher ranking in network meta-analysis is influenced by indirect comparisons, differences in baseline pain intensity, and may not reflect true differences in efficacy.
Turmeric contains curcuminoids that stop the knee joint from making chemicals that cause pain and swelling. They also boost the joint's own antioxidant defenses. Both regular and special turmeric do this. Because the regular version already gives enough curcuminoids to start this process, taking a special version that is absorbed by the body a little differently does not make the pain go away more. The joint gets the same amount of benefit.
What the research says
1 studyStudy: Effect of turmeric products on knee osteoarthritis: a systematic review and network meta-analysis
The study compared different turmeric supplements for knee pain and found that all worked about the same, so there's no proof that special high-absorption turmeric is better than regular turmeric.
