Chlorthalidone makes the kidneys remove more salt and water, which lowers the total amount of fluid in the blood vessels. Metoprolol slows the heart rate and weakens the force of each heartbeat, which reduces how much blood the heart pumps out. Together, less fluid and less pumping force drop the pressure inside the arteries more than either one alone.
