When lifting light weights, the muscles burn through energy quickly and build up waste products like lactic acid. This fatigue forces the nervous system to recruit more powerful muscle fibers that are usually only used with heavy lifting. These fibers experience more stress and damage, which triggers signals inside the muscle to build more protein and make the fibers thicker over time. This process happens even if you stop short of complete exhaustion, but only if enough fatigue accumulates to activate those powerful fibers.
