When muscles are worked to exhaustion with light or heavy weights, special repair cells around muscle fibers wake up and multiply. These cells do not add new nuclei to the muscle fibers, but they release signals and help restructure the tissue around the fibers. This prepares the muscle to grow larger and stronger, even without adding more nuclei.
