When the body doesn't get enough magnesium, the heart muscle cells run low on this important mineral. Without enough magnesium, the tiny powerhouses inside cells (called mitochondria) stop working properly and make harmful oxygen molecules that can damage the heart protein that helps the heart relax. This damage makes the heart stiff and unable to relax well, leading to heart problems. When magnesium is given back, the powerhouses recover, the damage is cleaned up, and the heart returns to normal.
