Why this might work

When bicarbonate is given, it reacts with acid in the blood to produce carbon dioxide, which enters cells and makes the inside of cells more acidic. This acidity blocks the cells' ability to take up glucose using insulin, so blood sugar stays high instead of dropping, and the risk of low blood sugar from insulin treatment does not decrease.
