Taking a statin reduces certain gut bacteria that help make the right kind of bile acids. This change in bile acids lowers a hormone called GLP-1, which makes the pancreas release less insulin after eating, causing blood sugar to rise. Adding UDCA fixes the bile acid mix, which brings GLP-1 levels back up, so the pancreas can release enough insulin to control blood sugar — without affecting how well the statin lowers cholesterol.
