When muscles are worked hard with many repetitions and little rest, they produce large amounts of waste chemicals like lactate and hydrogen ions. These chemicals build up inside the muscle cells, making the inside more crowded with particles. Water follows these particles into the cells to balance the concentration, causing the cells to swell and the muscle to puff up. This swelling can last for days because the body takes time to remove the excess chemicals and water.

This study found that doing a bunch of weight exercises back-to-back with almost no rest makes your muscles puff up a lot due to fluid buildup — exactly what the claim says. Even though they didn’t measure how long it lasted, the big swelling they saw makes it very likely it could last for days.
