Why this might work

Taking sodium bicarbonate pills adds bicarbonate to the blood, which neutralizes excess acid and raises blood pH and bicarbonate levels. The kidneys continue to lose function at the same rate because the bicarbonate does not stop the underlying damage to the filtering units of the kidney.
