One of these chemicals, PGE2, gets broken down and shows up in urine as a stable marker. At the same time, muscle damage lets a protein called myoglobin leak into the blood. Both the urine marker and the blood marker go up after exercise, but only because people with more muscle or better fitness have more tissue to damage and more inflammation activity — not because one directly causes the other.
