After a shoulder tendon is repaired, pain signals from the injury make the brain and spinal cord more sensitive to movement, causing the animal to avoid using the limb. Testosterone enters the brain and spinal cord, where it lowers this heightened sensitivity, allowing the animal to move freely again without needing the tendon to become stronger.
