When the immune system produces antibodies against the TSH receptor, some of these antibodies activate the receptor and force the thyroid to make too much hormone, while others block the receptor and stop it from working. Only when activating antibodies dominate does the thyroid grow and flood the body with excess hormone, lowering the signal that tells the thyroid to slow down.
