When a person stands up, blood pools in the legs and abdomen, and the body normally responds by tightening blood vessels to keep blood flowing to the brain. In older adults who have fallen before, this tightening response is too slow, so the brain gets less blood for a few seconds, causing dizziness and loss of balance that leads to a fall.
