The Claim
Leucine supplementation enhances post-exercise muscle protein synthesis in older men to a similar extent as in young men, despite age-related anabolic resistance.
What the research says
Supports is higher
Support is ahead, but a single strong opposing study can change this.
These are independent scores, not a percentage. Higher-grade studies count more, so a single strong opposing study can outweigh several weaker ones.
Taking leucine after exercise increases muscle protein synthesis in older men as much as it does in younger men, even though older men typically have reduced muscle building responses to stimuli.
See the scientific wording
Leucine supplementation enhances post-exercise muscle protein synthesis in older men to a similar extent as in young men, despite age-related anabolic resistance.
After exercise, leucine enters muscle cells and triggers a molecular switch that turns on protein building machinery. This switch, called mTORC1, activates a protein called p70S6K1, which speeds up the assembly of new muscle proteins using available amino acids. In older men, this switch is normally sluggish, but leucine forces it to work as strongly as it does in younger men, restoring muscle growth to normal levels.
What the research says
1 studyAdding leucine to a protein drink after exercise helps older men build muscle almost as well as it helps younger men, even though older bodies usually don’t respond as strongly. The study showed leucine boosted muscle growth signals in older men just like in younger ones.
