In obese individuals, fat cells in the belly release more fatty acids, which bind to a receptor called TLR4 on the surface of these cells. This triggers a chain reaction inside the cell that turns on genes that make inflammatory proteins. At the same time, the belly fat produces more of an enzyme that activates cortisol, a stress hormone that makes fat cells grow and become more sensitive to inflammation. The cortisol receptor and TLR4 work together to turn up the production of inflammatory signals even more, making the belly fat much more inflamed than fat under the skin.
