High iodine from the herbal decoction floods the thyroid gland, blocking its ability to take up more iodine and make thyroid hormones. At the same time, compounds in the decoction stop the growth of new blood vessels in the thyroid, cutting off the blood supply that feeds hormone production. Together, this rapidly lowers hormone levels and reduces blood flow through the thyroid artery.
