In plain English

In adults with Graves' disease, combining Haizao Yuhu Decoction with methimazole results in a larger decrease in blood flow speed in the thyroid artery after 12 weeks than methimazole alone.

See the scientific wording

In adults with Graves' disease, adding Haizao Yuhu Decoction to methimazole is associated with a greater reduction in peak systolic velocity of the superior thyroid artery (STA-PSV) after 12 weeks, indicating decreased thyroid blood flow and metabolic activity.

Why this might work

High iodine from the herbal decoction floods the thyroid gland, blocking its ability to take up more iodine and make thyroid hormones. At the same time, compounds in the decoction stop the growth of new blood vessels in the thyroid, cutting off the blood supply that feeds hormone production. Together, this rapidly lowers hormone levels and reduces blood flow through the thyroid artery.

  1. Study: Short-Term Efficacy and Safety of Haizao Yuhu Decoction Plus Methimazole versus Methimazole Monotherapy for Graves’ Disease: A Prospective Study Using Propensity Score-Matching

This study found that when people with Graves' disease took a traditional Chinese herbal remedy along with their regular medicine, their thyroid blood flow dropped more than when they took the medicine alone — meaning the thyroid was less overactive.
