When alcohol intake is reduced, sodium levels inside red blood cells drop, which allows more magnesium to stay inside the cells. This increase in magnesium causes blood vessels to relax by blocking calcium from entering muscle cells in the vessel walls and boosting nitric oxide activity. As the vessels widen, resistance to blood flow decreases, and blood pressure falls.
