Two types of antibodies fight for control of the thyroid's main switch. One antibody turns the switch on, making the thyroid produce too much hormone. The other antibody blocks the switch, stopping hormone production. When both are present, the thyroid's output depends on which one wins. If the activating antibody becomes stronger, the thyroid goes into overdrive. If the blocking antibody dominates, the thyroid shuts down. Even when the activating antibody is present, if the thyroid cells are too damaged, they cannot respond, and the thyroid stays underactive.
