In the earliest stage of lung squamous cell cancer, a section of chromosome 3 is lost and the remaining copies of two genes are chemically marked to shut them off permanently. This stops those genes from making proteins that normally prevent cells from dividing too fast, allowing abnormal cells to multiply without control before the cancer can be detected.
