Why this might work

When selenium is too low, the body cannot make enough protective enzymes that clean up harmful molecules, so DNA gets damaged and cells turn cancerous. When selenium is too high, those same enzymes become overloaded and start producing more harmful molecules instead, which also damages DNA and causes cancer.
