When omega-3 fatty acids enter the body, they replace a fat called arachidonic acid in cell membranes. This reduces the amount of arachidonic acid available for an enzyme called COX-2 to turn into prostaglandin E2. Instead, the enzyme uses omega-3 fatty acids to make a different, less inflammatory compound. This switch lowers the amount of prostaglandin E2 produced in tissues throughout the body.

4 studiesTaking high doses of omega-3 fatty acids (like fish oil) for six months lowered a harmful inflammation chemical called PGE2 in people’s blood. This means eating more omega-3s can help reduce this inflammation marker.
When people ate more omega-3 fatty acids, their body made less of a chemical called PGE2 that causes inflammation — especially in the colon. This happened even if we couldn't predict exactly who would see the biggest drop.
This study showed that applying a type of omega-3 fatty acid (EPA) to sunburned skin lowered a harmful inflammation chemical called PGE2. This means omega-3s can reduce PGE2 in the body, which supports the idea that eating more omega-3s might do the same.
