Why this might work

When muscles work very hard, they break down sugar without oxygen, making lactic acid. The lactic acid breaks into lactate and hydrogen ions. The lactate builds up inside the muscle cells but doesn't bring in enough positive ions to balance it, so the balance of charged particles inside the cell shifts. This shift forces more hydrogen ions to stay in the cell, making it more acidic. The acidity interferes with the muscle's ability to contract properly.
