The thyroid gland absorbs radioactive iodine just like regular iodine. The radiation from the iodine breaks apart DNA inside the thyroid cells, killing them. As more cells die, the gland stops making thyroid hormone. Once enough cells are destroyed, the body can no longer produce enough hormone, and hypothyroidism results.
