After eating protein, the muscles of older adults with sarcopenia do not take up amino acids well because they are resistant to insulin, and high levels of a signaling molecule called IL-6 pull amino acids away from muscle and into the liver and immune cells. This causes amino acids to stay in the blood longer instead of being used to build muscle, and excess amino acids get broken down for energy or used to make other proteins.
